Steve is a senior advisor to Abajian Law on a case-by-case basis. He is available to help resolve complex audits, including tax shelter controversies and estate and gift cases.
Steve’s track records as a tax practitioner includes a long and distinguished career with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Most recently, he served as the IRS director of the Los Angeles and Buffalo districts. Steve has had several managerial positions with the IRS, including chief of the examination division in Cleveland, Ohio and assistant director in Harford, Connecticut, and Laguna Niguel, California.
Steve was selected by the President of the United States for the Distinguished Presidential Rank Award for Fiscal Year 2000, the only IRS employee so honored that year. In 1996, he recieved the Meritorious Presidential Rank Ward. He was also accorded the IRS Commissioner’s Award, the highest award presented by the Commissioner of the IRS, on three separate occasions. Steve retired from the IRS in 2000.
After retiring from the IRS, Steve joined Deloitte Tax LLP as a director in the Tax Controversy group. Steve applied his extensive IRS experience by instructing clients on the complexities of various IRS practices and procedures. Steve retired from Deloitte Tax LLP in 2005.
Steve is a member of various civic and professional organizations. He belongs to the Iowa Bar Association and is a former advisor to the USC Federal Tax Institute and the Tax Section of the California Bar. He is also an advisor to the UCLA Tax Controversy Institute and Loyola Law School’s Tax LL. M. program. Steve received his B.S. and J.D. degrees from Drake University and has completed executive programs at Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
